Surveys show that the free computer-operating system Linux accounts for 10%-27% of new computer server software sales in 2000. According to research, Linux is the fastest-growing server software, posing a growing threat to Microsoft Corp's aim to dominate servers as it does personal computer operating systems. Recently, IBM, Computer Assoc, Hewlet-Packard Co and Intel contributed a total $24 million to allow computer programmers worldwide to improve Linux.
